VOTING RIGHTS & ELECTION REFORM

The League of Women Voters of Florida promotes electoral reforms that make voting easy, equitable, and effective at expressing public will through election results.

We oppose gerrymandering, that is, manipulation of election district boundaries to favor one party or class. We advocate for fair, transparent redistricting.

We are interested in any issue or process that directly affects any Florida
citizen’s access to voting (e.g., voter registration, voting machines, ballot design, etc). Learn More...

EDUCATION

The League of Women Voters of Florida supports Florida’s constitutional requirement to make adequate provision for the education of all children that is ‘uniform, efficient, safe, secure and high quality’. We support a free public-school system for Florida with high standards for student achievement and with quality of educational opportunity for all that is financed adequately by the state through an equitable funding formula. REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH & JUSTICE

Without the ability to make reproductive decisions for one’s own body, women who can become pregnant cannot participate equally in our democracy. This harm will exacerbate societal inequalities and fall disproportionately on people of color and low-income communities already facing egregious obstacles to health care. Learn More...

GUN VIOLENCE PREVENTION

The League of Women Voters of Florida supports regulations concerning the purchase, ownership, and use of handguns that balance as nearly as possible individual constitutional rights with the general interest and welfare of the community. (1989)

The League supports licensing procedures for gun ownership by private citizens to include a waiting period for a background check, personal identity verification, gun safety education, and annual license renewal. Learn More...



NATURAL RESOURCES

The League of Women Voters of Florida supports state legislation for energy conservation and greater use of renewable sources like solar energy. The League supports policies that promote conservation of freshwater and its availability for environmental, public, agricultural, industrial, and mining uses on a priority basis. The League of Women Voters also supports legislation to ban oil and gas drilling off Florida’s coast, as well as funding for public transportation. Learn More...
